Installing an extension at your home may not be at the top of your priority list at this time of year but it should be. Many incorrectly believe that a home extension only serves a purpose during the summer and whilst this was true in days gone by, the modern-day extension can be used at any time of the year as Greenway have proved time and time again.

Recent research carried out by Nationwide Building Society has shown that adding an extension to your home could increase its value by almost a quarter. This is partly because structures such as our glass extensions can be utilised whatever the weather, whilst still providing you with the warmth you need to savour such luxurious living.

A Greenway glass extension is a relatively new entry into the home extension market and it offers a totally new way of home living, the likes of which have never been seen before. This is because not only does it come with the glass covered roof that you would also normally get with a conservatory or orangery, but it also comes with an outdoor veranda area.

The veranda enables you to combine outdoor and indoor living all in one go and you will be shielded from the elements as the glass roof overhangs the veranda area. We will even install a set of doors to your glass extension so that you have easy access to it.

When you decide to enjoy the interior of your extension you can be certain that it will offer comfort of the very highest order as UPVC windows are installed throughout to help keep you warm.

We can guarantee that you will never have seen anything like the glass extension before so why not come and see it with your own eyes along with our replacement windows at your nearest Greenway showroom.

One of the biggest gripes people used to have with the old-style of conservatory is that it would become too hot in summer and too cold in winter. This made it largely redundant for significant periods during the year and did a lot to put off other people from having one installed at their property.

Instead, many people turned their attention to orangeries as firstly they were brand new to the market, and secondly, they were perceived as being much more likely to have a consistently warm temperature. However, an orangery needs to have appropriate air conditioning unit to make sure that the temperature inside the structure can be regulated.

It also has the added benefit of utilising outdoor air. When experiencing warm weather outside, an orangery will keep you cool and transfer heat inside at a temperature you can stand. When weather becomes adverse, your orangery will ensure that you stay warm.

Another problem which can occur in an orangery is the fact that the glare of the sun can sometimes spoil your enjoyment. There are now a variety of specially-made blinds that you can purchase and install so that the sun never gets in your eyes. They can also help regulate the temperature all on their own and improve the aesthetics of the interior of the extension.

Most orangeries come ready-installed with UPVC windows so that the extension offers the upmost in energy efficiency. Double glazing in Bristol will help keep your heating bills at an acceptable level as energy is currently at its highest ever cost.

Once you have everything in place, your orangery will become the premier location in your property as nothing can match it in terms of luxury. Get your friends, family and neighbours round and make your new orangery the envy of everybody.

The government has announced figures which reveal that around half of UK homes are insufficiently insulated. This is one of the main causes of high energy bills as when a property is poorly insulated it results in energy leaking into the outdoors, something which is also detrimental to the overall health of the planet as a whole.

There are a variety of different home improvements you can make to overcome the problem such as insulating your loft and filling in wall cavities. But another simple way of insulating your home more effectively is by replacing your old windows with double glazing in Gloucester.

Ageing windows are a common problem when it comes to insulation as the frames on a traditional window tend to become less reliable at trapping heat and will start to rot and crumble. This happens over time as it comes into contact with all different forms of weather and weakens.

The moment you spot a flaw in your windows when it comes to keep your property warm, you need to invest in replacement windows.

Modern windows are much better equipped to deal with outdoor temperatures as they come fitted with a weather-resistant UPVC frame. The toughness of the UPVC frame and glass used within it will ensure that little or no heat is able to escape from the confines of your home.

This will then in turn bring down the cost of your energy bills, enable you to turn your heating off more regularly and give the room in which they are installed proper insulation all day long.

The savings you make on energy bills will eventually cover the initial cost of having any new windows installed and you could even have enough money left over to start saving for one of the many conservatories in Gloucester available.

Whenever you are contemplating buying a new property there are numerous features that you will seek from a home before you think about parting with your hard earned cash. It is such a big investment that you have to feel that everything about your new purchase is right for your lifestyle. We usually seek enough bedrooms for all the family, a nice kitchen and bathroom area and a living room large enough to house your sofa and decorative accessories.

Those homes which suffer from a lack of space are those homes which will usually end up with a for sale sign attached to their front lawn for months and months down the line. If however you had a conservatory in Bristol installed it would significantly increase the amount of open space you had at your disposal and the increase the likelihood of you achieving a quicker sale.

If you fancy sitting down to a meal under the moon and stars at night with friends or family, you could do that by simply putting a dining table in your conservatory. Perhaps you work from home and find it difficult to find somewhere were you can concentrate due to excess noise from other rooms in the house, if so you could turn your conservatory into an office area. We all know how the kids like to play out in the garden but sometimes due to the weather it is not possible. Turn your conservatory into a play room and it will turn out to be the next best thing, a really exciting alternative for them.

It is so frustrating when you want to move property but you cannot trigger enough interest in your home. Installing a conservatory, double glazing in Gloucester or windows in Cardiff are a guaranteed way of impressing any interested parties.

Drive past any street in the UK at the moment and you will see a never ending sea of ‘For Sale’ signs, many of which will have been up for many months and in some cases years. Due to the recession many people have been unable to tempt buyers into purchasing their property and are stuck in a home in which they no longer wish to reside.

The problem is that many homes do not have a distinguishing feature present in order to make their home look more attractive in these difficult times. One way in which this could be achieved is through the installation of a conservatory.

Conservatories in South Wales can make a home stand out from a crowded row of homes that need to be sold. When people cast their eye on a conservatory it immediately triggers visions of elegance, class and opportunities. Opportunities in that a conservatory can be used for some many different purposes, extra living space, somewhere to admire the garden, a new office, your own personal fitness suite or it could just be used for storage purposes.

Home buyers with families will be particularly attracted to a property already installed with a conservatory as it overcomes the problem of small living area and those who like to entertain have the option of inviting friends and family over. If you have a small garden, then again a conservatory can create the illusion that the garden is bigger than it actually is and we all aspire to have a large garden area.

Unique features are not just restricted to conservatories, the addition of double glazing in Cardiff and windows in Bristol could also help persuade a buyer to part with their money on your home. Make your home the stand out property on your road and you will soon be on your way to pastures new.

Uswitch has found out that households are paying £84 a year in hidden taxes on their energy bills to help meet the cost of combating climate change, and these charges could double to £176 within a decade. You can fight back against this by relying on your heating and electricity less often by investing in some double glazing.

This is because double glazing in Gloucester, as well as conservatories in Hereford, conservatories in Bristol is designed to provide you with all year round warmth and comfort as they will utilise the outdoor heat to warm you up inside. Double glazing could bring a whole new dimension to your home as they will bring in a huge amount of light and it could end up being somewhere you spend the majority of your time when at home. During the long summer nights it will mean you do not have to rely on your electricity as much as you would at other times in the year. They will also keep you cool as they will shield you against excessive heat.

When you have special occasions in your home and invite guests into your living room, they will definitely leave suitably impressed by the appearance of your windows, both internally and externally. Ensure that you choose a set of windows with a colour that most suits your household as not all window finishes will suit the traditional or modern looking home. The right choice can add enormous value onto a property.

A brand new set of windows are almost certain to outlast your stay in the home, as once they are installed they tend to be ever present. They will also continually look good with just the minimum of maintenance necessary. So, put all your energy’s into buying brand new windows this summer and save thousands in the long run.

The DGCOS publicity machine has recently picked up on a thread on renegadeconservatoryguy.co.uk website and created a press release which has been published on various websites, including the Fenestration News:

The press release states:

Dear Ian

Commenting recently (28th June) on the Renegade Conservatory Guy blog about the recent Which? report, a director of the GGF and FENSA alleged that “GGF members have their own ‘Ombudsman’”.

This distortion is more than just a bit of spin, and it illustrates why the industry so badly needs the Ombudsman Scheme. I am sure the GGF is well enough advised to know the difference, but his attempt to confuse an in-depth, compulsory, free of charge, legally binding Ombudsman (with judicial powers) with an opt-in/opt-out arbitrator with no powers of enforcement is an example of the sort of half truth that has beggared double glazing for so long.

That sort of industry self-deception has been regularly exposed by Which? for decades, along with other tricks of the trade. It’s why the industry is used by The Daily Mail, and others, as a benchmark for bad practice and dishonesty.

The GGF does not have an Ombudsman, with or without quotation marks. Let us be clear in future, please – and honest.

Yours sincerely

Tony Pickup
Founder of the Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS)

I must admit, when I read this I did feel that Tony had blown out of all proportion the context of Alan’s comment and used it for his own benefit. These are strong words indeed.

Anyway, Alan Burgess has responded as follows:

FAO Tony Pickup

Firstly I note your comments on other sites suggesting a director of the GGF and Fensa has made comments, and has spun the term “ombudsman”.

This is untrue.

Yes I am a director of those (and other) bodies, however please note they were either “personal observations” or were written “for and on behalf of Masterframe Windows Ltd”.

They were not those of any other body. No other context should be considered.

You seem very concerned that I have spun a term, so I thought it best to obtain some definitions of the term, because that’s what members of the public will use.

Heres what I found…..

Wikipedia defines an ombudsman as:

“a person who acts as a trusted intermediary between an organization and some internal or external constituency while representing the broad scope of constituent interests. ‘Ombudsman’, which is an indigenous Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish term, is etymologically rooted in the Old Norse word umbuðsmann, which essentially means ‘representative’.

Usually appointed by the organization, but sometimes elected by the constituency, the ombudsman may, for example, investigate constituent complaints relating to the organization and attempt to resolve them, usually through recommendations (binding or not) or mediation.

Ombudsmen sometimes identify organizational roadblocks running counter to constituent interests.”

Another dictionary site says,

An official appointed by a government or other organization to investigate complaints against people in authority. This position is designed to give those with less power — the “little people” — a voice in the operation of large organizations.

om•buds•man
1.a government official who hears and investigates complaints by private citizens against other officials or government agencies.
2a a person who investigates and attempts to resolve complaints and problems, as between employees and an employer or between students and a university.

Word History :
In Swedish an ombudsman was a deputy who looked after the interests and legal affairs of a group such as a trade union or business.

In 1809 the office of riksdagens justice ombudsman was created to act as an agent of justice, that is, to see after the interests of justice in affairs between the government and its citizens.

This office of ombudsman and the word ombudsman have been adopted elsewhere, as in individual states in the United States.

The term has also been expanded in sense to include people who perform the same function for business corporations or newspapers.

I then looked for arbitrator, that’s a person who…….

1.A person chosen to settle the issue between parties engaged in a dispute.
2.One having the ability or power to make authoritative decisions; an arbiter.

Sound similar, no?

Tony, please ask yourself these questions;

Is the GGF “a trusted intermediary between an organization and some internal or external constituency?”

Does the GGF, “investigate constituent complaints relating to the organization and attempt to resolve them?”

Does the GGF, “ act as an agent of justice?”

Does the GGF, attempt to resolve issues, “usually through recommendations (binding or not) or mediation?

Then it’s reasonable for people to use the term “ombudsman” or “arbitrator” in similar ways.

Tony, I did not try to spin anything, just pointing out the similarities of theses terms. No doubt you will have a far more precise, defined term, but laypeople aren’t interested, what they want is someone who resolves their problems when things go wrong.

Your scheme works for your members, it is not for the common good of every double glazing consumer in the UK, only those using your membership. Likewise the GGF is only interested in dealing with complaints involving its members.

Both offer different methods, both perform a similar role, lets get on with getting EVERY company to sign up organisations that promote good practice, instead of arguing that one is technically different to the other.

In two weeks time I have a representative of the DGCOS coming to talk to West Yorkshire Windows and Conservatory Outlet about the benefits of joining the scheme.

Their latest press release has not done their cause any favours in my eyes. Personally, I feel this industry has many genuine and good people which has cleaned up its act over recent years. Am I guilty of self deception?

Is our industry really a benchmark for bad practice and dishonesty?

Let me be ‘clear’ and ‘honest’. As far as I’m concerned, the DGCOS is a completely unnecessary organisation created to take advantage of outdated misconceptions of a previous era. There’s still room for improvement clearly, but a profit making ‘ombudsman’ scheme is not the answer.
